The cost to become an ALF administrator in Florida is not one flat state fee. Cost 1: The 26-Hour ALF Core Training Course

Rule 59A-36.011 requires at least 26 hours of ALF core training plus the competency test. Florida does not set one universal retail tuition price for every approved core trainer in the rule. That means the course price depends on the registered provider, delivery format, materials, schedule, and other provider-specific features.

Before paying, verify the provider's current approval through AHCA's ALF resources or the TMRI approved core trainer information. Then ask exactly what the advertised price includes.

• Live instruction or online access, depending on format.
• Exam-preparation materials, if offered.
• Any rescheduling, transfer, or refund restrictions.

Cost 2: The ALF Core Competency Test

Rule 59A-36.011 says the competency-test fee may not exceed $200 and that a new fee is due each time the test is taken. The MacDonald Research Institute currently lists the test cost at $200 and requires payment in advance.

This is the clearest fixed amount in the administrator pathway. It is also why exam preparation has a financial value. An unsuccessful attempt can cost more than time because another testing fee is required.

Cost 3: Level 2 Background Screening

Rule 59A-36.010 requires the administrator to comply with Level 2 background screening requirements. The rule establishes the requirement, but the amount you actually pay can vary based on the screening process, fingerprinting vendor, and related transaction fees.

Cost 4: Continuing Education Every Two Years

The sources reviewed for the ALF administrator pathway do not establish a separate professional ALF-administrator license application fee like the state licensure process used for nursing home administrators. Instead, Florida's ALF rules focus on the individual administrator's qualifications, training, competency test, background screening, and continuing education, while AHCA licenses the assisted living facility.

That distinction matters when you build your budget. Do not confuse the facility's ALF licensing fees with the personal costs of preparing to serve as the administrator.
