How Much Does It Cost to Become an ALF Administrator in Florida?

Aug 17, 2026

The cost to become an ALF administrator in Florida is not one flat state fee. Your total depends on the approved core training provider you choose, the required competency test, background screening costs, whether you need to retest, and the continuing education you complete after becoming an administrator.

The Most Important Fixed Cost: The current Florida rule caps the ALF competency-test fee at $200, and the MacDonald Research Institute currently charges $200 per test attempt. Core-training tuition, background screening, continuing education, travel, and optional study support can vary.

Cost 1: The 26-Hour ALF Core Training Course

Rule 59A-36.011 requires at least 26 hours of ALF core training plus the competency test. Florida does not set one universal retail tuition price for every approved core trainer in the rule. That means the course price depends on the registered provider, delivery format, materials, schedule, and other provider-specific features.

Before paying, verify the provider's current approval through AHCA's ALF resources or the TMRI approved core trainer information. Then ask exactly what the advertised price includes.

  • The full 26 hours of approved core training.
  • Required manuals, handouts, or digital materials.
  • Live instruction or online access, depending on format.
  • Exam-preparation materials, if offered.
  • Any rescheduling, transfer, or refund restrictions.

Cost 2: The ALF Core Competency Test

Rule 59A-36.011 says the competency-test fee may not exceed $200 and that a new fee is due each time the test is taken. The MacDonald Research Institute currently lists the test cost at $200 and requires payment in advance.

This is the clearest fixed amount in the administrator pathway. It is also why exam preparation has a financial value. An unsuccessful attempt can cost more than time because another testing fee is required.

Cost 3: Level 2 Background Screening

Rule 59A-36.010 requires the administrator to comply with Level 2 background screening requirements. The rule establishes the requirement, but the amount you actually pay can vary based on the screening process, fingerprinting vendor, and related transaction fees.

Do not build your budget around a random internet estimate. Confirm the current process and fee with the provider or screening system you will use.

Cost 4: Continuing Education Every Two Years

Florida Statute 429.52 requires administrators to complete at least 12 contact hours of continuing education every two years. The price of those hours is not one universal amount in the statute or rule. It depends on the approved or appropriate education source you choose.

Failing to maintain the continuing-education requirement can be much more expensive than the course itself. Under Rule 59A-36.011, an administrator or manager who completed core training but did not maintain the CE requirement must retake the core training and competency test.

Cost 5: Optional Exam Preparation and Coaching

Study groups, practice resources, private coaching, and exam-preparation support are optional costs, not substitutes for the required 26-hour core training or the state competency test. Their value depends on what you personally need.

If you want structured exam preparation, FALC offers an ALF study group for the Florida administrator exam. Keep the distinction clear when budgeting: required core training comes from an approved core trainer; exam preparation is supplemental support.

Cost 6: Travel, Time, and Retesting

The easiest costs to overlook are often the practical ones. Depending on your course and testing choices, you may need to budget for travel, parking, time away from work, childcare, hotel costs, or lost work hours. Test locations and schedules can also affect your total.

TMRI currently lists test dates in multiple Florida cities, but availability changes. If you choose a distant testing site because it has an earlier opening, your true exam cost can be higher than the $200 registration fee.

Is There a Separate Florida ALF Administrator License Application Fee?

The sources reviewed for the ALF administrator pathway do not establish a separate professional ALF-administrator license application fee like the state licensure process used for nursing home administrators. Instead, Florida's ALF rules focus on the individual administrator's qualifications, training, competency test, background screening, and continuing education, while AHCA licenses the assisted living facility.

That distinction matters when you build your budget. Do not confuse the facility's ALF licensing fees with the personal costs of preparing to serve as the administrator.

The Cheapest Option Is Not Always the Lowest-Cost Decision

A low-priced course can become expensive if the trainer is not approved, the format does not work for you, you are not prepared for the exam, or you miss a compliance deadline and have to repeat training. Verify first, then compare price.

And if your real goal is ownership, remember that administrator preparation is only one small part of the financial plan for opening an ALF in Florida. Property, inspections, insurance, furnishings, staffing, reserves, licensing, and operations create a very different budget than administrator training alone.
