Where Can I Take Florida ALF Core Training

Where Can I Take Florida ALF Core Training?

Aug 17, 2026

If you are searching for where to take Florida ALF core training, the most important question is not which course has the best-looking sales page. The first question is whether the trainer is currently approved to provide the state-required core training.

Start With Approval, Not Advertising: Florida requires ALF core training to be conducted by a registered core training provider. First-time trainees should verify the trainer's current approval before enrolling. AHCA provides core-training-provider information, and TMRI maintains an approved core trainers page that directs candidates to the approved list.

What Makes a Florida ALF Core Training Provider Legitimate?

Florida Statute 429.52 requires core training to be conducted by persons registered with the agency as having the necessary experience and credentials. Rule 59A-36.027 details qualifications for core training providers, including core-training completion, successful passage of the competency test, continuing education, and additional experience or education criteria.

That distinction matters because a general assisted living seminar, caregiver course, or business workshop is not automatically the 26-hour core training required for administrators and managers.

Where Should You Look for an Approved Trainer?

Start with the AHCA Assisted Living Facility resource page. AHCA currently lists "Administrator Training and Core Training Provider Information," a "List of Approved Core Trainers," the core training curriculum, and a link to The MacDonald Research Institute among its ALF resources.

You can also use TMRI's Approved Core Trainers page. TMRI explains that first-time core-training attendees must complete the course with a trainer approved by AHCA and links to the approved trainer list.

Can Florida ALF Core Training Be Taken Online?

Training delivery options can differ by approved provider. TMRI's current testing registration asks candidates to identify their in-class or online trainer, which confirms that approved training may be delivered through more than one format. The key compliance question remains whether the trainer and course are approved and whether the training satisfies the state curriculum requirements.

Do not assume that "online" means self-paced, live, or available on demand. Those are provider-specific details. Confirm the format, schedule, attendance requirements, completion rules, and certificate process before paying.

What Should the Core Training Include?

Rule 59A-36.011 requires at least 26 hours of core training plus the competency test. Florida Statute 429.52 identifies major subject areas that include Florida ALF laws and rules, resident rights, abuse and neglect reporting, resident needs, nutrition and sanitation, medication management, recordkeeping, fire safety and emergency procedures, and Alzheimer's disease and related disorders.

If a course description seems dramatically narrower than those subjects, verify what you are actually purchasing.

Questions to Ask Before You Enroll

  • Are you currently listed as an AHCA-approved or registered ALF core training provider?
  • Does this course satisfy the full minimum 26-hour core training requirement?
  • Is the class live, online, in person, self-paced, or a combination?
  • What attendance or participation rules must I meet to receive my completion documentation?
  • How and when will my training completion be confirmed for TMRI testing?
  • What is included in the course price, and are study materials or exam preparation separate?
  • What is the refund or transfer policy if I cannot attend the scheduled training?

What Happens After Core Training?

Completing the 26-hour course does not by itself complete the administrator core-training requirement. Successful completion includes passing the competency test. The MacDonald Research Institute currently administers that test, requires advance registration, and requires the candidate's training to be confirmed.

The current rule requires a minimum passing score of 75 percent. The rule caps the competency-test fee at $200, and TMRI currently charges $200. A new fee is due for each test attempt.

Do Not Buy Core Training Before You Know Your Goal

Core training is required for administrators and managers, but your larger plan still matters. Are you preparing to work inside an existing ALF? Are you opening your own facility? Are you trying to understand the industry before committing to a property? Those goals affect what you should learn beyond the minimum course.

This is where many future owners make the mistake of collecting certificates without building a complete plan. If your goal is ownership, connect your administrator training to the full process of opening an ALF in Florida.

Training Is the Beginning, Not the Whole Network
